Tooth Whitening

What is tooth whitening?
Tooth whitening is a fantastic, non-invasive way to quickly and completely enhance your smile. If you’re happy with the shape of your teeth but don’t like the colour then teeth whitening may be for you. We can lighten your teeth and help to remove stains and discolouration caused by age or tea and coffee and other lifestyle choices.

Whitening is one the most popular cosmetic dental procedures because it can dramatically improve how your teeth look and take years off your smile. It’s not a permanent fix, especially if you continue to drink tea or coffee or smoke, but neither is it harmful to your teeth so it can be repeated regularly under our supervision.

How does tooth whitening work?
Whitening can be done in the dental surgery or using a system of ‘at home’ whitening trays. In both cases a specially formulated whitening gel – we use Phillips Zoom – is applied to the teeth. It is very important that tooth whitening is undertaken under the supervision and guidance of a professional dentist. As with all treatments, we will first need to be assured that your mouth is healthy and free of any periodontal disease or cavities. Our hygienists will also clean and polish your teeth.

At Home whitening trays
At Home whitening allows you all the comfort of gradual treatment at home and it’s a popular choice. During an initial visit we will take an impression of your teeth and from this mould we will make a custom-fitted plastic ‘tooth tray’ – a bit like a mouth guard – into which you will place a specially formulated whitening gel and which you will need to wear for several hours a day over a period of a few weeks. The tray is precision made to fit your mouth comfortably, allowing the whitening gel to be applied evenly over the surface of your teeth.

During your second visit we will fine tune your tooth tray so it fits snugly and give you the gel that will whiten your smile. We’ll demonstrate the simple process until you’re comfortable doing it on your own and work out a timetable that is right for you. You will need to use these products once or twice a day for two or three weeks to achieve sparkling white teeth, depending on the initial condition of your teeth.

In Surgery whitening
In Surgery whitening can give you whiter teeth in 60 to 90 minutes and it’s carried out in our clinic. For this whitening treatment we use a more powerful whitening gel than for the At Home trays and a special laser light which activates the gel and allows bleaching to happen much faster. We usually recommend that it is accompanied by our long term At Home system to maintain your whiter smile for longer.

After an initial consultation we will take impressions of your teeth which we will use to create your bespoke whitening trays. During your second visit we will proceed with the in-chair whitening treatment, which takes between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on what type of stains you have and how white you want your teeth to be. At the end of the treatment we will show you how to fit and wear your whitening trays, and correctly fill your trays with the prescribed whitening gel for a lasting and sparkling smile.
