Dentures at O3 Dental Letterkenny

Why do dentures need to be secured?
Dentures can be problematic in that sometimes they do not stay in place, even with adhesives. For patients with none of their own teeth this can lead to a dramatic loss of function and confidence. Chewing can be severely affected, leading to indigestion and, in extreme cases, malnutrition.

How do implants stabilise dentures?
In the lower jaw, a simple and cost-effective solution is the provision of two strategically placed dental implants onto which we attach an abutment (a connecting element) which stabilises your removable denture while it is in your mouth. This option generally gives a stable and satisfactory result and can stabilise a full arch of teeth.

When considering treatment for missing teeth in the upper jaw, the story is somewhat different. Scientific research shows that six implants is best to stabilise an upper denture, given that the bone has a softer, more ‘spongy’ texture. However, if the bone is of sufficient quality, four implants can work. We will assess your jawbone and decide what is possible.

Is this a practical solution?
You must remove and clean your denture and mouth according to the specific hygiene regime we prescribe for you, and come for regular check-ups at the clinic.
