A cyst is a sac of tissue that has either fluid or soft material inside it. It is not unusual for cysts to form in the mouth and jaw, usually in response to low-grade infection from an abscess. Some can form next to or around teeth or down in the roots. They usually form because the teeth nearest the cyst have died or are dying, although there are some other rarer causes of cysts in the jaw and they can form as the result of some genetic syndromes. You often won’t notice them until they become infected, although they can be picked up on x-ray if you are undergoing other treatments. Damian will examine you closely and determine the cause of your cyst.

Damian removes most cysts under local anaesthetic. The specimen is then sent for examination under the microscope. If a cyst is deemed too large for local anaesthetic removal, Damian will refer you to hospital.
