Do you have a lump in your mouth?
If you are worried about something unusual in your mouth it’s important to come and see us straightaway, as it always pays to obtain an early diagnosis. That said, there are all sorts of causes for lumps in the mouth and generally the majority are benign. They can be safely removed under local anaesthetic here in our clinic, without the need for referral to hospital. Your tissue specimen is always sent for microscopic examination afterwards.
Occasionally some skin conditions can present in the mouth and a small biopsy can be taken and sent for examination to confirm the diagnosis, and an appropriate referral made to your doctor. On rare occasions we can see discoloured patches that may merit referral to a specialist at the dental hospital. At O3 Dental though we have also invested in a special hi-tech camera, the VELSCOPE, that can assist in determining the nature of the discolouration.
